Photography has been very much at the fore this month, I’ve continued to take photos around my local area when out walking the dog. I’ve been drawn to doors and windows since taking the shot of the mustard painted residence that I wrote about last time. I think it’s the irregularity of the various door and window shapes that draws me, the ‘oddness’, or uniqueness of them. Here are a few images from the start of the month.
More recently I’ve been taking pictures with an app called 65x24 which takes images in the same aspect ratio as the Hasselblad XPan cameras of old. More about that in my next post but here are a couple of taster shots.
I don’t usually show any of my design work even though the title of the blog specifically mentions the word Design. Although my artwork and photography is largely design driven by its nature, it’s not design per se. As a graphic designer my output is mainly for commercial clients so it’s difficult to show work, and to be honest, a lot of it is _very_ boring…
However, I do quite a few promotional flyers and graphics for ArtCan, the volunteer-run arts organisation that I’m a member of. This is a flyer for the next exhibition, the premise being that artists were invited to submit work across more than one genre or medium. Hence the title of the exhibition. The groupings in the DNA style strands each contain work by the same artist – some had two pieces accepted, some three. I did a few versions with different work in each piece, then the idea being that the main poster for the exhibition itself could combine all the strands and thus show everyone’s work.
We’re into week 9 of ‘Revolve’ the 52 week project. Nine of us met up for a ‘show and tell’ earlier this month to talk about our work and to show some of our outputs so far. It was really interesting to see some of the other artists’ work and hear about their approach and how they envisage it all unfolding. Here’s my latest tin picture:
I also made a book (of sorts) this month. I’ve made photo zines previously, either made from a single folded sheet of paper or stapled booklets printed commercially, but this is the first self-bound one I’ve done. The pictures were taken, that’s right, out walking the dog(!) a couple of summers ago.
Coincidentally, just after I’d printed out the pages for the book, we had news at the collective where my studio is based that we’d inherited some bookbinding equipment. There are a couple of presses, a guillotine and a planchest full of papers and leather. We plan to start an Indy Publishing Club so exciting times ahead!
And that’s a wrap! Thanks for your interest in my work.
Richard this is interesting because I've been thinking how I do some of the things I do at Instagram somewhere else. I have thought of an image diary at Patreon and maybe to make a monthly zine of selected observations as a post and as a digital download for a certain tier and a physical zine for another. Thanks for sharing these images. Great to follow your work. Is presentation why you decided to do this here and not Patreon?
